Erik the Red: Monument to the viking who settled in Greenland at Qassiarsuk - across the fjord from Narsarsuaq - in 972. He was the father of Lief Ericsson who discovered North America about 500 years before Columbus. Erik had been exiled from Iceland for 3 years following his murder of a neighbour. He sailed west in reaction to a report of good land by a sailor who had been blown off course en-route from Norway to Iceland.
